Get Rid of Nighttime Leg Cramps.

June 25, 2008

Tip of the day:
My client Joanne passed along a neat-o Jedi magic trick for defeating the night time leg cramps so prevalent in older folks (I’ve no doubt many of you out there over the age of 50 know what I’m talking about).
The Cure:
Press your thumb into the little divot under your nose (the infranasal [...]

Australians Are Fatter Than Us.

June 24, 2008

Congratulations to Australia; you’ve outdone us Americans.
Australia Now World’s Fattest Nation.
Barely nudged out the win – by one percent!  Australia also sadly holds the distinction of having the fastest growing rate of childhood obesity in the world.
Some stats for your perusal (from the article):

About 4 million adult Australians are obese.
The “fat bomb” is ticking loudly, [...]

Lessons From Tim Russert.

June 19, 2008

First off, my sincere condolences to Mr. Russert’s family and friends.  May he rest in peace.
On to the lesson (warning: links to studies and media ahead):
Tim Russert’s recent passing is (to my eyes, anyway) another example of how doctors with the best intentions doing everything they’re “supposed to” do end up not being able to help a [...]

Don’t Avoid Trans Fats?

April 10, 2008

One seemingly strong argument you might have heard from vegetarians and vegans is, “Meat is bad for you, since all meat contains naturally-occuring trans fatty acids, which we all know are bad bad bad for you.”
Well, half of the statement is entirely true: Meat (from ruminants) does indeed contain trans fats, as does dairy.  But the [...]

Gary Taubes.

March 9, 2008

I finally got around to watching the entirety of this video. If you don’t know who Gary Taubes is, he’s a science journalist who wrote my favorite book of the last 10 years, Good Calories, Bad Calories. In my opinion, this book is required reading for any health or medical professional (regardless of [...]

Can’t get enough of my wild rantings on cholesterol?  Check out:

Aim First, Before You Shoot.

January 17, 2008

Do you lift weights? If you do, do you also take a statin (such as Zocor or Lipitor)? If so, you may be shooting yourself in the foot (from a muscular standpoint), and not doing yourself a whole lot of good from a health standpoint. In fact, you’re likely worsening your health.
Bold words; I know. [...]

Better Living Through Chemistry?

December 12, 2007

From today’s NY Times:
Another Study Finds Heart Risks in a Diabetes Drug.
Too bad “Just eat less sugar” isn’t easily patentable or easily commodified and sold.
In the interest of fair and balanced reporting, it is true that meta-analyses suck pretty badly as far as quality goes (when speaking of scientific studies).  The main problem with meta-analyses [...]

Exercise is Good For Your Brain.

December 6, 2007

Dr. Larry McCleary describes (arguably) one of the best reasons for a person to engage in an exercise program.
It’s important to note that exercise, carried out for too long, can cause a stress reaction of its own accord.  After roughly 60 minutes or so serum levels of cortisol (which had been held in check by [...]

Or, You Could Just Stop Eating Sugar.

October 21, 2007

The most e-mailed article from yesterday’s New York Times was this little ditty about diabetes:
In Diabetes, a Complex of Causes. (pardon the link, I realize not all of you are registered with the New York Times)
You’d be forgiven if your first thought upon reading this article was about how wonderful it is that [...]
