Additions or Subtractions?

Subtractions - definitely subtractions.

As in, which is more important to diet success: The good foods you add to your diet, or the bad foods you stop eating?

Don’t get me wrong; it’s excellent that you’ve started eating salads and adding fish oil to your diet.  But do you really think that the fat-burning effects of DHA and EPA will counteract the apple strudel you ate after dinner?

Just as the antioxidant content of acai won’t negate the carcinogenic effects of smoking, eating well sometimes doesn’t balance out eating poorly at other times.  In fact, it may delude you into thinking you’re doing more for fat loss than you actually are.  Then, when it comes time to step on the scale, you receive a(n unhappy) surprise. But you really shouldn’t be; after all, good calories don’t cause bad calories to vaporize into nothingness - and they’re both still calories that count towards your daily total.

To paraphrase Bruce, “Hack away at the nonessentials.”  Like pasta.
